PROBLEMS OF MONEY TRANSFER TO ANGLOPHONE REGIONS

 Since February 2019, the transfer of money from Qatar in the United Arab Emirates to the North West and South West regions of Cameroon has been an uphill task. “I live in Qatar. I tried sending money through MoneyGram to my family in the North West of Cameroon but was told it was not possible.

No official reason was given for such an abrupt stop». Our source in Qatar declared. 

Curiously enough, Cameroonians in Qatar attest that the impossibility to wire money home is affecting just the Anglophone Regions while it’s possible to transfer money to the other eight regions of the country through the same money transfer agency without any issue.

This has caused these desperate Cameroonians(most of whom are Anglophones) to wire money to relatives in the French speaking part of Cameroon from where the money is sent to those in the North West and South West Regions.

For those who want to send money directly to the North West and South West Regions, they have resorted to Western Union.
To one of them, “We abandoned Western Union because of high transfer charges plus a policy that one cannot send more than two hundred thousand francs to a relative in English speaking Cameroon”. He explains that when such an amount is sent, the receiver is obliged to create an account with the agency (Western Union) before receiving the money.

Bertin Kisob, a Cameroonian living in the United State of America narrates his ordeal. “MoneyGram blocked me from sending money to Cameroon in 2017.At first, I did not understand but only discovered later that it had to do with the arrest and detention of my brother. He was arrested in Bamenda,transported to Yaounde and detained for engaging in a hunger strike against bad governance”. He explains that since then, he has not been able to send money to Cameroon through MoneyGram.

Analysis:

Anglophone militiamen also known as the Ambazonia fighters, challenging the authority of the government of Cameroon in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon continue to fight despite all odds.
From the use of local artisanal weapons at the beginning of 2017, today the amba boys showcase and fight with weapons matching those of the military. 

This has placed the Cameroon security service in a tight corner leading to the conclusion that external support is largely responsible for the successes recorded by the Ambazonia fighters.

This, some commentators say has possibly led the regime of Paul Biya to resort to blocking funds from abroad to people in the anglophone regions of the country.
People in these two regions are often questioned and made to fill forms originating from the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon are often questioned and obliged to fill forms detailing the purpose of the money they receive from abroad through this agency.

Note that, Ambazonia leaders in the diapora practically command the process for the restoration of Ambazonia Statehood back in the anglophone regions of Cameroon. The government is doing all to weaken the struggle and stop the war by stopping the funding they suspect comes from abroad.

Consequently, innocent anglophones who only depend on relatives abroad for survival are today feeling the pinch of economic hardship coupled with the fact that weekly ghost towns and frequent lockdowns have paralyzed activities in the regions. 

In January 2019, the national station announced that MoneyGram and Western Union services in Cameroon were perturbed after the government obliged both international money transfer agencies to increase their commissions.

MoneyGram and Western Union who rose against the move said it was either they increase transfer charges or see their benefits drop drastically.

National And International News Round-Up:

It was a bloody Wednesday in some localities in the troubled North West and South West Regions of Cameroon today.
A gun battle between security forces and pro independence fighters in Bambalang, Ngohketunjia  Division, North West Region left at least three Ambazonian fighters dead.
Guns and other ammunitions were seized from the fighters.
Reports from Mbveh, a locality in Kumbo, Bui Division, say some five soldiers were shot dead following hours of gunfight this afternoon.
Calm is still to return to the area which has suffered series of attacks recently.


At least 10 players of the University of Buea Football Club kidnapped early today are yet to be released.
According to the coach of the club Nicolas Amongu, the players were taken at around 9:00 am in a football field on campus situated behind the school restaurant.
The players were training ahead All University Games in the month of May.
The administration of the University Buea has not issued any official statement following the kidnapped.
Ambazonians fighters are said to be responsible for the kidnapping.

Cameroon’s ex-Minister Delegate in charge of Penitentiary Administration is still being held captive by his abductors.
Ngafesson Emmanuel Banta sources in Bamenda in the north west region of Cameroon say was kidnapped this morning from his Ntabesi residence.
No one has claimed responsibility of the incident though there is a general believe that the act has been committed by Anglophone militia called the Ambazonia fighters.

Professor Gervais MENDO ZE will have to spend fifteen more years in prison after he was  Tuesday March 19th, 2019, sentenced for 20 years in jail.
The former General Manager of the Cameroon Radio and Television (CRTV) was sentenced at the Special Criminal Court in Yaounde, for embezzlement of public funds while  he served at General Manager at CRTV.
The court also charged him to pay the sum of 15 billion francs cfa.
Other person's sentenced  include AMANG A BETEGNI 18 years in prison and charged 99 million francs cfa.

Mozambique:
Mozambique's port city of Beira is reeling from the damage inflicted by Cyclone Idai.
So far 200 people have been confirmed dead in the southern African country, along with another 100 in neighbouring Zimbabwe, but the death toll could be much higher.
Those who survived the disaster have had little reprieve to mourn the loss of their loved ones or salvage the little that is remaining of their belongings. They are in desperate need of food, shelter and clothing.

Google has apologised to Ghana's finance ministry and central bank for displaying a wrong exchange rate for the Ghanaian currency, the cedi, on its currency converter.
On Friday, Google's currency converter said it took 22 cedis to buy one US dollar, when
 the correct rate was four times less.
Google said in a letter to the ministry and bank that the error occurred because of a “minor glitch” but was “quickly fixed”.

KUMBA DISTRICT HOSPITAL ON FIRE

 

4 die of fire, 5 Cars burnt in Kumba District hospital inferno 

Local authorities in Kumba have said four patients who were receiving treatment at the District hospital in Kumba have died after the health establishment went up in flames early this morning. 

"Two of the victims have been identified while we are yet to identify the two others" a source told Mimi Mefo Info. 

At least five vehicles were set on fire while the 

Nurses quarters, male medical, male and female surgical, Gen room among others were brought down to ashes. 

The incident has left patients and Medical personnel of the affected area stranded. 

One of them who can barely walk recounted:

"The amba boys came into the hospital. We were scared of the boys, but instead the boys ask us to move out" recounted a victim. 

Another witness on the ground had a contrary oppinion: "The military has been carrying out a lot of operations in civilian attire lately. Amba boys cannot set ablaze a Hospital where they or their relatives sometimes receive treatment."

Earlier today, a Gendarme officer on the basis of anonymity said the hospital was set ablaze by the military because it treats wounded Amba fighters.

As at now, the person(s) or group responsible isn't clear enough.

Lives are now at stake as dialysis services in the hospital has have been interrupted.

ABOUT 36 PASSENGERS KIDNAPPED ALONG THE BUEA - KUMBA HIGHWAY

Jan. 15/01/2919 about Thirty-six passengers were abducted by gunmen on Tuesday along the Buea-Kumba highway in the Southwest, one of the two war-torn English-speaking regions of Cameroon, according to locals.

"Two transport buses left Kumba for Buea and were stopped at Ediki village by gunmen. All passengers were ordered to step down and hand over their identification cards. They were then taken to the bush to an unknown destination. The bus drivers were ordered to return to the bus stop in Kumba," Samuel Asong, a driver who witnessed the incident, says so.

Movement along the highway has been halted and the search for the hostages has been launched, according to local authorities.

Cases of kidnapping are on the rise amid escalating conflict in the troubled English-speaking regions of the largely French-speaking African country.

In November, a group of 79 school children was kidnapped in Bamenda, the most populous city of Northwest, another English-speaking region.

The Cameroonian government has blamed armed separatists for the rampant abductions but the separatists insist they are staged by government to tarnish their "struggle for independence" internationally.

The United Nations estimates that more than 430,000 people have been displaced internally since government forces started clashing with armed separatists in November 2017.

The separatists are fighting to secede from Cameroon and create a nation called "Ambazonia" in the two Anglophone regions of Northwest and Southwest.
