SERGIO RAMOS: REAL MADRID CAN CATCH BARCELONA

 

Sergio Ramos insists Real Madrid can catch Barcelona in the LaLiga table after a 3-1 derby win at Atletico Madrid moved his side up to second in the table.

Ramos scored from the penalty spot in Saturday's victory at the Wanda Metropolitano, netting his 11th goal in all competitions this season, making 2018-19 the best scoring record of his career.

Antoine Griezmann had cancelled out Casemiro's bicycle-kick opener before Ramos struck from 12 yards, with Gareth Bale's 100th Madrid goal wrapping up Madrid's first win at the Wanda.

Madrid are now five points behind Barcelona, although the leaders are at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, and captain Ramos declared the title race alive after a fifth successive league win.

"The league is still to be contested," Ramos said to beIN SPORTS. "There are many points in play and any team can complicate your life as it was seen in the first round [of games].

"We have that hope and we will fight for the league and make it difficult for Barcelona even though they have a very important lead.

"Real Madrid played a very, very good match, very complete in all the lines, not only in attack, but also on a defensive level the team left few possibilities to the opponent and I think the result is fair enough.

"They pushed well up and caused us a lot of danger, but the match is 90 minutes and we have to know how to play the time and in that sense Real Madrid made a very smart game."

Madrid will face Barca twice more in the next three weeks, the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final followed by a LaLiga clash at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 2.

And former Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois agrees with Ramos that Madrid now have Ernesto Valverde's side in their sights.

"It was a complicated game," Courtois said to Real Madrid TV. "But we knew how to get past the rival, who was not easy at all.

"We put ourselves ahead of them in the table and we'll see how we go to May but now we're very good, with good feelings after the game against Barcelona.

"We do not feel fatigue."

MESSI STATISTICS THIS SEASON 2018/2019

 

• Leo failed to create a goal by scoring or assisting in four games this season.
• Two of those games were 30-minute cameos.

Lionel Messi continues to prove that age is just a number as he is showing amazing football with unbelievable figures at 31 years old. The Argentine has already managed 29 goals and 14 assists in 28 matches this season.

Moreover, there were only four games where Leo failed to create a goal this season. He didn't score or assist in the matches against Real Valladolid at the notorious Zorilla stadium, Real Sociedad at the Anoeta, Tottenham in the Champions League and the latest El Clasico in the Copa del Rey. Curiously, Messi has only played 30 minutes against both the Spurs and the Whites.

Messi keeps making history at Barcelona as he has long been the leading scorer of the total Spanish top-tier. He has recently netted his 400th La Liga goal. This season alone, he has already scored 21 league goals - the first player across the European top five divisions to reach this figure. He is on the course of his record-breaking SIXTH Golden Shoe award.

The forward is currently recovering from a minor injury and his participation in the game against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday is uncertain. He started the midweek Clasico on the bench and was introduced after an hour of play. Messi clearly needs a bit of practice to get back to his best as he wasn't able to deliver his trademark jaw-dropping football against Los Blancos on Wednesday.

WEST HAM HANDS ‘SALAH’ RACIST ABUSE EVIDENCE TO POLICE

 

West Ham have passed on findings from an investigation into racist abuse directed towards Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah to the Metropolitan Police.

Salah was the subject of expletives and derogatory references to his Muslim faith from a supporter at London Stadium when the sides played out a 1-1 Premier League draw.

The abuse was audible on mobile phone footage, shot from the West Ham end, of Salah talking a corner, which was subsequently shared on social media.

West Ham announced an internal investigation into the incident on Wednesday and have moved quickly to involve the authorities.

"After a thorough and immediate investigation following the abhorrent racist abuse aimed at Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah on Monday night, West Ham United can confirm that it has handed evidence to the Metropolitan Police," a club statement read.

"The club is unequivocal in its stance – such abuse will not be tolerated. There is no place or excuse for this kind of behaviour."

Speaking at a news conference earlier on Thursday, West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini called for any fans found guilty of racially abusing players to be banned from Premier League grounds.

"Of course, I think that cannot happen in the stadium," he said. "The best way to manage those things out of the game is to remove them from the great spectacle that is the Premier League.

"We must have high standards and when this happens, you must take action. The club knows how to work and says it cannot accept these kind of things in the game.

"It was a very good game and everybody was enjoying the game, so these people must be punished as soon as we can."

DE JONG AIMING TO RETIRE AT BARCELONA

 Frenkie de Jong is aiming to retire at Barcelona having secured an end-of-season transfer to the Spanish giants from Ajax.

The highly rated 21-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a rise to prominence over the last couple of years, becoming a key part of the Ajax and Netherlands teams.

Barca, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City had long been linked as admirers of the talented playmaker, before the Catalans secured his signature last month for an initial €75million which could rise to €86m.

Should things go well, De Jong is hopeful he can see out the rest of his career at Camp Nou.

Speaking to Het Kontakt, De Jong said: "Paris Saint-Germain was a good option, but Barcelona has always been a dream.

"I am happy with my five-year contract, and if I succeed, the chances are that I will never leave, just like [Lionel] Messi."

It remains to be see what number De Jong will have on the back of his Barca jersey, but he wants to wear 21 - currently belonging to Carles Alena - and suggests that may be accompanied by his first name.

"In July I sign my official contract in Barcelona and I am also presented to the fans and the press," he said.

"We are also thinking about playing with Frenkie on the back of my shirt, which Nike prefers from a merchandising point of view, but I'm not sure I want it.

"Playing with 21 would be nice, because that is kind of my number, but the selection for the new season is not yet known, so I will have to wait."

LIVERPOOL AND MANCHESTER CITY KEY REMAINING FIXTURES

 

 With Liverpool dropping points for the second consecutive game after having the opportunity of moving seven points clear of Manchester City, LiveScore takes a look at the key remaining fixtures for the two title favourites as the race for the Premier League heats up.

Both teams face three matches against other top six competition before the end of the season, with City playing Chelsea this weekend in the first of the remaining high-profile contests.

Manchester City vs Chelsea (February 10)

Chelsea pose an immediate threat to Manchester City, with the two Blues' to face each other this upcoming weekend. The west London club played City off the park in their most recent meeting, claiming a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge in December. Despite controlling possession and finishing with the majority of the ball, City could not consistently find a way through a vastly improved Chelsea defence and confident attack led by Eden Hazard.

An early chance for Raheem Sterling was really the only clear cut opportunity for the visitors to score, and Chelsea grew into the game with N'Golo Kante particularly pivotal through the middle of the park. Kante popped up to smash in Chelsea's first right before half-time after Hazard, playing in the false nine role, mesmorised three City defenders and cut the ball back for the late-arriving Frenchman.

City were missing Sergio Aguero, the Premier League's most lethal marksman, for the match but he will certainly feature in the return fixture. He was unstoppable against Arsenal on the weekend, scoring after just 48 seconds and completing this hat-trick in the second half as City compounded the pressure on the league-leading Liverpool. You would expect Manchester City to look a vastly different side than the one that lost 2-0 at the Bridge, with Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne now both cemented back in the team after overcoming injuries, but the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain looks to have buoyed the London side and his impressive brace on the weekend against Huddersfield will have City very wary.

Manchester United vs Liverpool (February 24)

Liverpool's first remaining top six features sees them travel to Old Trafford for the next installment of their classic rivalry. With Fulham the only Premier League match to be played for the Red Devils before they host Liverpool, because of the upcoming FA Cup weekend, there is the very strong possibility Ole Gunnar Solskjaer welcomes Jurgen Klopp's men still unbeaten in the Premier League.

Consecutive draws at home to Leicester City and away to West Ham mean Liverpool's once breathable lead over Manchester City has eroded, and they could easily head to this fixture in second place. The two last played mid-December, with Liverpool tearing the Red Devils to shreds at Anfield and running out 3-1 winners with United's goal only coming as a result of an Alisson error. The loss saw manager Jose Mourinho fired and signalled the club's last loss to date.

Manchester United's defence failed to come to terms with Liverpool's attack during the match, with Xherdan Shaqiri playing a starring role with two goals. Both sides face titanic Champions League matches in the lead up however, which will test the depth of both teams. Liverpool host Bayern Munich in the first of their Round of 16 clashes with the German champions on the 19th, while United welcome PSG on the 20th. 

Liverpool have not won at Old Trafford since 2014 when the Brendan Rodgers-led side smashed United 3-0 thanks to two goals from Steven Gerrard and one from Luis Suarez. They will need to overcome that hoodoo if they are to keep pace with Manchester City.

Manchester United vs Manchester City (March 16)

Manchester City will make the cross-town trip to face a very different Manchester United side than the one they beat 3-1 earlier this season. Interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has restored faith at Old Trafford, after both fans and players alike became disenfranchised under the tenure of Jose Mourinho who was fired in December. Since his sacking, United are undefeated in 10 matches, including knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup and a win away to Tottenham.

United have the right style and attributes to attack Manchester City. The width, speed and interchangeability they possess out wide in the form of Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford can exploit the Manchester City fullbacks, who like to tuck in and push forward. They also have the unique mismatch of Paul Pogba, who can gallop between the midfield and defensive lines and attack the City centre backs. City will require a huge game out of Fernandinho and/or Gundogan, depending on who gets the defensive role, in attempting to stop the run of Pogba. 

It's also likely United turn back to one of Mourinho's more familiar tactics of man-marking, with Ander Herrera offering an elite option in attempting to take a singular player out of the game. We may see Herrera tag Kevin de Bruyne around the park to try and lessen the influence of the Belgian master. That will be an area to watch.

Manchester City will still be favourites heading into this match, even if Solskjaer's side do somehow manage to stay undefeated up until the fixture, but it will certainly be another huge hurdle in City's title hopes.

Liverpool vs Tottenham (March 31)

Arguably Liverpool's biggest test to come, the Reds host a Tottenham side that has very quietly moved within striking distance of a top two finish. Where they hold perhaps their greatest advantage is both in Tottenham's away record, which is the worst of the top six, and manager Mauricio Pochettino's record against Jurgen Klopp, which holds just one win from eight attempts. 

Their previous meeting saw Liverpool secure an impressive 2-1 win at Wembley, a ground where Tottenham have been almost unbeatable this season. A late goal from Eric Lamela flattered Spurs who, despite a significant proportion of possession, failed to threaten the goal of Alisson.

Both clubs will be fresh off the international break, so we will see rejuvenated teams that may only be separated by a result or two. Mousa Dembele was Tottenham's best in their previous meeting, proving to be Spurs' most reliable source of possession, so his transfer to the Chinese Super League means they will be looking to someone else to control midfield. Their defence has looked incredibly suspect at times this season, particularly away from home, so this will be no easy task for a Tottenham side that no one is really taking seriously for the title as it stands.

But they deserve credit for the position they find themselves in and their ability to cope with major injuries to Harry Kane and Dele Alli. Harry Winks has come on in midfield in recent weeks and is proving to be a real player of the future for Spurs, while Liverpool's once red hot rotation in the middle of the park has hit a bit of a slump - with Xherdan Shaqiri and Naby Keita out of form, Fabinho suffering from niggling injuries and James Milner being required to fill in across the field with defensive injuries mounting. It will be a must win for both teams.

Liverpool vs Chelsea (April 13)

Liverpool's final top six clash of a season which could bring the club its maiden Premier League title will be against Chelsea at Anfield. With Liverpool facing matches against Cardiff City, Huddersfield Town and Newcastle to round out three of their final four games, this could be the most important game of their season. A win over the Blues may just put them in position to close out the season against three teams that are all facing relegation, with a final game at home to Wolves the only fixture of measureable concern to come.

The Reds were lucky to even draw a point from their previous meeting at the end of September, where a Daniel Sturridge stunner in the 89th minute cancelled out Eden Hazard's early goal in a game that Liverpool struggled throughout. Chelsea, then undefeated after a hugely promising start under new manager Maurizio Sarri, have since been vastly more inconsistent, at times looking unconfident at the back despite the stellar play of record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga in goals. Midfield is still a huge area of concern for Chelsea, with Jorginho underwhelming alongside N'Golo Kante.

Liverpool have looked vulnerable on the counter attack this season, particularly when they push both fullbacks forward and their colossal centre half Virgil van Dijk joins the attack. The passing range of David Luiz could come into play with Chelsea looking to strike on the break with Eden Hazard and Willian, so look for the Blues to play through their skillful defender, particularly given their issues in midfield. 

Liverpool will also look to exploit the tendencies Marcos Alonso getting forward when in possession. Alonso rampaging down the left flank could become a point of attack for the Reds, with Mo Salah occupying the right wing role. His speed could prove a huge issue for Chelsea should they not have the defensive cover of Luiz and Antonio Rudiger being extremely disciplined in protecting that side of their defence.

The Reds certainly have the advantage and will be favourites to better the result they forced at Stamford Bridge, but with just four games to go following this fixture it will be an extremely nervy atmosphere at Anfield.

Manchester City vs Tottenham (April 20)

The last of Manchester City's battles with top six opponents will come in late April at home to Tottenham. Given Spurs currently sit just two points behind the Citizens and five points off the lead, this match potentially could have the added wrinkle of a third team competing for Premier League glory. 

The reverse fixture saw City 1-0 winners at Wembley, with an early Riyad Mahrez goal the only difference. Spurs though have taken advantage of recent slip-ups from both Liverpool and Manchester City, winners of three consecutive matches despite the absence of Harry Kane and Dele Alli. South Korean forward Son Heung-min has been a revelation this season, banging in 10 goals and adding five assists for the club. He will be crucial in adding a complementary goal-threat to Kane.

Tottenham's largest hurdle to overcome appears in the record of their manager Mauricio Pochettino against his counterpart Pep Guardiola. In 14 matches between the pair Pochettino has come out victorious only twice. Spurs' away form also is the worst of the top six, so they will be up against it during a crucial period of the season. We may well know after this match who the likely Premier League champion will be.

ONE OCCUPANT VISIBLE IN SALA PLANE WRECKAGE, AAIB CONFIRMS

 

One occupant is visible in the submerged wreckage of the plane that went missing with Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala on board, the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has confirmed.

The small aircraft disappeared over the English Channel on January 21 when travelling to Cardiff from Nantes, with authoritiues initially unable to find any trace of the plane, Sala or pilot David Ibbotson.

But on Sunday, David Mearns – the coordinator of a privately funded search – confirmed a wreckage had been discovered, which was identified as the missing Piper Malibu plane.

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) conducted a further search of the area overnight on Sunday and the AAIB says footage shows one of the aircraft's occupants within the wreckage.

An AAIB statement on Monday read: "Having identified a priority search area last week, the AAIB agreed a search strategy with Blue Water Recoveries Ltd to maximise the chance of locating the aircraft wreckage.

"The AAIB commissioned specialist vessel Geo Ocean III and Blue Water Recoveries Ltd commissioned FPV Morven and the search area was divided between the vessels. Both vessels began their search on the morning of Sunday, February 3.

"Early in the search, the Morven identified an object of interest on the seabed using its side-scan sonar equipment.

"It cleared the immediate area for the Geo Ocean III to use its underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to survey the area of the seabed in which the object was located.

"Based on analysis of ROV video footage, the AAIB investigators on board the vessel concluded that the object is wreckage from the missing Piper Malibu aircraft, registration N264DB.

"The ROV carried out a further search of the area overnight, but did not identify any additional pieces of wreckage.

"Tragically, in video footage from the ROV, one occupant is visible amidst the wreckage. The AAIB is now considering the next steps, in consultation with the families of the pilot and passenger, and the police.

"The image shows the rear left side of the fuselage including part of the aircraft registration. We intend to publish an interim report within one month of the accident occurring."

Prior to Sunday, the previous significant update from the AAIB had come when seat cushions thought to be from the plane were found on a beach in northern France on Wednesday.

It is 11 days since Guernsey Police ceased looking for the aircraft, which was carrying Sala, 28, back to Cardiff after he had said goodbye to former team-mates at Ligue 1 side Nantes.

Initial search and rescue efforts proceeded for three days before authorities opted to call a halt to their scanning of the area.

Guernsey harbourmaster Captain David Barker called their chances of survival "extremely remote", but a number of high-profile football figures and members of the public answered the family's calls to fund a private search operation that has been headed up by Mearns.

BEST AND WORST DEALS OF THE JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

The January transfer window didn't offer up too many surprises, with just under £570 million spent in total from Europe's top five leagues compared to more than £800 last year. Chelsea pulled off the most expensive deal of the window with a £58 million deal for Borussia Dortmund and USA starlet Christian Pulisic, who will have to wait until the end of the season to link up with the Blues.

There were just four transfers of over £30 million completed and only one came from a Premier League club, a stark contrast to 2018 where there were four transfers of over £50 million and all involved Premier League sides, including the £75 million Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang moving to Arsenal for £56 million.

Best transfers:

Leandro Paredes - £34.7 million to PSG

PSG identified central midfield as the biggest position of need as the French champions chase the only trophy that continues to allude them despite their record-breaking spending - the Champions League trophy. They have acquired a gem in Leandro Paredes. The Argentine is a traditional central midfielder blessed with a wonderfully-rounded game, characteristics that seem to have vanished from the modern game as players have become more and more specialised to particular skills.

Paredes has the capabilities of sitting back and building from the back with exquisitely accurate passing but also the confidence and talent to get forward and create. As adept on the ball as he is off it, Paredes will offer the ideal compliment to Marco Verratti, who has been isolated at the centre of PSG's midfield for years as they attempted to fill the void of Thiago Motta. With comparisons to Xabi Alonso, Paredes promises to be a stalwart in both Paris and Argentina's midfield over the coming years.

Denis Suarez - Loan to Arsenal

Cut very much from the cloth Arsenal seek for its midfielders, Denis Suarez heads to north London in a loan deal that could become permanent depending on his ability to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League. Suarez was signed by Barcelona from Manchester City in 2013, and eventually returned after loan spells in 2016 where he was handed Xavi's iconic no.6 jersey, a sign of the club's confidence in the young midfielder.

Despite the kit number, Suarez plays more like Xavi's former partner-in-crime, Iniesta, showing grace and flair on the ball while still possessing the necessary creative tools. His first season in the senior team for the Spanish giants was hugely impressive, but he has since fallen out of favour and it was clear he was not a part of manager Ernesto Valverde's plans. The move to Arsenal could be a stroke of genius by Gunners manager Unai Emery, who coached Suarez at Sevilla during his final loan spell before returning to the Camp Nou. 

His exact role in the current Arsenal setup is not yet clear. Given his versatility we could see Suarez start on the flank in the place of Alex Iwobi, who has had a hugely frustrating season, or could replace the departing Aaron Ramsey in the no.10 role for the club. Regardless of where he plays, Suarez will be an astute signing by an opportunistic Arsenal should he be able to cope with the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

Youri Tielemans - Loan to Leicester City

Once touted as Europe's finest young midfielder, Youri Tielemans' career has stalled after an unsuccessful time at Monaco, up until recently the region's top football farm. Tielemans will look to reignite his career in the Premier League, and should he do it at Leicester the top clubs will be knocking at his door once again.

At just 21-years-of-age, Tielemans has a game with the maturity of a seasoned veteran. Blessed with breathtaking calmness and control in possession, Tielemans quickly showed he was beyond the Belgian league during his teenage years at Anderlecht. He joins Leicester during an interesting time of bridging between their miraculous Premier League success in the 2015/16 season and their future ambitions as remaining a pernennial top-half side pushing for European football. He joins a promising midfield where he will play alongside the defensive-minded Wilfred Ndidi and behind the wonderfully talented James Maddison.

Tielemans is not known for his physicality, given his small frame and lack of pace, but his composure and footballing IQ should see him in good stead in a team that has the parts in place to take advantage of his unique ability.

Worst transfers

Gonzalo Higuain - Loan to Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri's loudest criticism has been his inability to avert from the comfortable and implement alternative tactics and philosophies upon his teams - and the transfer of Gonzalo Higuain will only increase the volume of his critics. The failure of Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata to produce goals from the striker position forced Sarri into the market, and he has looked to an old friend of whom he turned into a household name during their time together at Napoli.

This is not that Higuain. The Argentine has seen his league goals drop from 36 with Napoli in 2015/16 to 24 in 2016/17 and 16 in 2017/18 with Juventus, before knocking in just 6 for AC Milan this season before his move to Stamford Bridge. He looks physically slower and less mobile, which does not pose well given the speed and physicality of the league he is about to join. His first two games for Chelsea, both starts in a FA Cup win against Sheffield Wednesday and a Premier League defeat away to Bournemouth, have only compounded the lack of confidence in his signing.

This appears to be another classic Sarri move, turning to a familiar face who is confident in his particular style of play, but this one appears doomed from the start.

Mousa Dembele - £11 million to Guangzhou R&F

The reason this makes our list is not the fee itself, but the message Tottenham is sending its fans with a transfer of this nature. Mousa Dembele has inarguably been Spurs' best central midfielder over the past few seasons. He has a reputation around the Premier League as being one of the most underrated players in the competition, as composed and confident on the ball as any. Tottenham have gone over a year without signing a player, with the central midfield position a significant area of concern, yet Dembele was the one constant and arguably their most consistent.

As Spurs await the green light to open their new stadium they must continually combat speculation of Europe's biggest clubs circling for both their star players and manager. The easiest way to do so is to ensure Champions League football, something very much within their grasp, but shipping out Dembele halfway through a crucial season screams greed on the part of the board and owner. Dembele had made it clear he wanted a wage that the conservative club could not offer, but rather than keep hold of the Belgian and use his exception skills to help them make another run at the top four, Tottenham took the £11 million, an amount of money surely insignificant to a billion pound club.

Tottenham have now hamstrung their manager by reducing his options in a crucial position and informed their fans they care more about a minor sum of money than increasing their chances of Champions League football. Had the club brought in a new signing in the position it would have made more sense, but this screams greed. Arsenal could have demanded a significantly higher fee for Aaron Ramsey, who is in the same situation as Dembele, but instead they valued the final six months of his contract and what he could help them achieve. Tottenham have done the opposite and it could be costly.

Wait and see transfers

Christian Pulisic - £58 million to Chelsea

There is no doubting the talent of Christian Pulisic, but you wonder whether this particular transfer is for the right reasons. The darling of the American media desperate for a face for the growing popularity of football within the world's biggest sporting market, Pulisic joins Chelsea with the weight of a huge fee and a nation on his shoulders. After a breakout 2017/18 season with Borussia Dortmund, the 20-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Bundesliga leaders and will look to kick start his career at a club infamous for its lack of trust in youth. 

The move could prove to be a safeguard for the potential departure of Eden Hazard, who continues to flirt with Real Madrid who appear unconvinced about the Belgian as their next Galactico. However, should that move not materialise, the opportunities for Pulisic will be limited with the American having to fight it out with Willian and Pedro for the other starting wing role, with Higuain and the aforementioned Hazard locked into the other two forward roles. 

The move will no doubt be a prosperous one for the club off the field, with Chelsea securing their place as America's team and the commercial benefits that brings, but you can't help but fear for Pulisic that he may experience some of the frustration Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and others have felt before him.
